What Made you Proud in 2020?

What a year!

There is no doubt about it, 2020 has been tough! While many of us may just wish to put this year into the rear vision mirror.  Reflecting and writing down what you may have achieved can be hugely beneficial to your physical and mental health.

Writing things down can help clear your mind. Juggling everything life threw at us this year has been overwhelming. Whether  it’s home schooling the kids while managing those Zoom meetings, or the financial stress of lost income.  Or even the lack of social contact with our family and friends. You will be surprised how much lighter you feel after writing down all of your stressors.

Reflecting and improving

Reflecting on what made us proud can foster gratitude and self-compassion, both of which have been shown to have a positive impact on human happiness. Did you keep up with those virtual workouts while in lock down? Or perhaps you taught yourself a new skill, like baking sourdough bread. Whatever it is that you did to stretch yourself from your regular routine, is a reason to be proud.

Writing things down can also help you establish your priorities. If you’re noticing any recurring themes in that list of things you’re proud of, perhaps that’s telling you something about the priorities in your life. It’s human nature for motivation to come in peaks and troughs. When you have a list to come back to, it can help remind us of why we’re motivated and what is most important to us in the first place.

You know, it may feel like this year has been a waste, but you might be surprised by what you’ve managed to achieve. That sense of achievement can foster a sense of pride…. You see where I’m going here right? So, give yourself that gift this Christmas. The benefits may surprise you.

Let’s make next year a great year
