Have I Slipped A Disc?

Back pain is a common, tough obstacle to navigate. Unfortunately for back pain, narrowing down the causes can be even tougher. The most common question related with back pain is as to whether or not a slipped disc may be the culprit. Common symptoms of a slipped disc include:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Neck pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Numbness or tingling in your hands, arms, shoulders, back, legs or feet.
  • Lower back pain
  • Problems bending over or standing up with a straight back.
  • Pain in the hips or legs

Although these are a few symptoms to look out for, it is not uncommon for people to encounter no symptoms and still have a slipped disc. Although symptoms may ease over time, it is important to seek intervention if any of the following persist:

  • Painkillers are not helping
  • The pain is no better after a month
  • High temperature or hot and shivery
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Swelling around your back
  • The pain is worse at night

As far as professional intervention goes, Physiotherapy is recommended to assist patients in their pain management and to help get them moving again. Once a physiotherapist has assessed the injury, an exercise program may be prescribed and full recovery will be right around the corner.
